Bereavement Walking Group

Event Details

Hospice’s Bereavement Walking Group is a non-traditional type of bereavement support.

Accompanied by trained hospice volunteers, participants who have lost someone due to illness in the last two years, can walk and talk with others who understand and learn how others have healed.

Offered weekly on Thursday mornings, this outdoor walking venue (location TBA) takes place every month except July and August. Participants must be able to walk for approximately 45 minutes (choose your pace, benches are available for breaks).

There is an ease in sharing when you walk shoulder to shoulder with someone, instead of having to sit and look them in the eye, as is the case with traditional bereavement support groups.

Conversations flow easily, tears are shed, challenges and frustrations are shared, suggestions offered. It is 45 minutes where participants are really heard. There is no need for participants to ‘put on a brave face’ or pretend they are doing better than they are, because the volunteers and other participants know that the grief journey is long and hard.

To learn more and to register, please contact Hospice Waterloo Region’s Intake Coordinator, Sarah Beth, at 519-743-4114 ext. 608 or intake@hospicewaterloo.ca.

The journey through grief does not have to be a solitary one. There are volunteers at Hospice who are willing to accompany the bereaved on that journey wherever it may lead them.
