At Hospice Waterloo Region, our mission is to engage our community to inspire, nurture and comfort the human spirit in life, death and bereavement. We actively invite the community to join us in exploring new ideas, learning important information for their or a loved one’s health care journey, and initiate discussions about quality of life, death, and more.

Story circle is a space for us to come together to share our stories of care. It is a time
for self-reflection to help us navigate our responses to the life events we navigate.
In Story Circle we read and reflect together, respond to brief writing prompts and
engage in conversations that are designed to allow new understanding to emerge and
to strengthen our resilience. We practice the art of listening and witnessing. Using
poetry, contemplative prose and art as the backdrop for our sharing, the tools and
strategies learned are transferrable to personal practice and are proven to decrease
potential burnout and increase our capacity for self-care and compassion.
Who? Story Circle sessions are open to all staff, health care providers, spiritual care
providers, volunteers working in hospice palliative care settings and members of the
community with interest in contemplative practices. Newcomers are most welcome!
When? We meet virtually once per month, generally on the second Monday of the each
month from 7-8:30pm. It is perfectly fine to register even if you don’t expect to be able
to attend every gathering.
Facilitator: Martina Steiger
Please register with [email protected] to be included in our monthly email

“The problem with not talking about death and dying is that we now have no idea what to say or what to do, or how to act when this inevitable part of our lives approaches, whether for ourselves or someone we love”
— Katie Duncan, Nurse Practitioner
In this session, we will explore the idea that dying is a normal part of living, and it will impact us all. We describe, in very gentle and understandable terms, the dying process. We clear up common myths that surround symptom management and the dying process. Most importantly, we give participants tips and strategies to provide comfort and support to a person who is dying, as well as their caregivers, so that if/when you are faced with this situation in the future, you will feel safe and comfortable providing support.
Who is this for? For adults.
Trigger warning: this session will explain the dying process and may not be suitable for individuals who are recently bereaved.
