People tend to think of a legacy as something monumental or larger than life. It can be that. But it can be much simpler, too: finding meaning in the time we have left, enshrining a moment a family will always remember, and knowing that memories will endure.

Legacy work at Hospice is the process by which we share precious moments, create keepsakes and make connections with special people in our lives. It is, in fact, not about death and dying at all, but about life and living.

It is therapeutic for the individual in our care and beneficial to families as well. Many times it brings joy and comfort and helps people cope, not just in the moment, but through the days, months and years that follow the loss of a loved one.

Ashley, a member of our Client Services team, coordinates and runs the Legacy of Love program, with help from trained hospice volunteers. Legacy activities can last a few minutes or several hours. What is more important than the activity itself is the message of love and care expressed through doing or making something together.

Ashley recalls working with one family who wanted to do finger painting.

Ashley Tyrell of Hospice Waterloo Region.

They picked the colours they all loved, and it wasn’t a sad experience at all but one filled with reminiscing, shared memories and laughter.

When we remember someone close to us who has died, we cherish the legacy they have given us – a lock of hair, family heirloom, a silver dollar, pocket watch, favourite recipe, letter, a whispered word or story. We carry these memories and mementos in our hearts and appreciate them for all time.

If you would like assistance from a volunteer to help you complete a legacy activity, please contact Hospice Waterloo Region at 519-743-4114.
